I am Setrida El Hachem, an experienced educator and Researcher. My journey in academia began at Lebanese American University where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Biology and my Master's degree in Biological Sciences and delved into groundbreaking research. During my time as an instructor, I had the privilege of teaching a variety of courses, ranging from genetics, microbiology, and anatomy labs to ecology and general biology for three years now. This hands-on experience allowed me to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts and tailor my teaching approach to meet the diverse needs of my students. One of the most rewarding aspects of my teaching journey was guiding pre-med students through their senior study projects, empowering them to gain valuable research experience and develop critical thinking skills essential for their future careers in medicine. My teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning and the cultivation of a supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and explore their scientific curiosity to the fullest.

My Masters thesis focused on inducing resistance to azoles and echinocandins in a sensitive reference strain of C. albicans by growing it in increasing drug concentrations followed by phenotypic assays, in vivo studies and whole genome sequencing to determine the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance. The bioinformatics part included analysis of our data on multiple software including MAUVE, IGV, Snippy, BRIG, and inspection of variant calling files. My research journey advanced further when I started to work as a research assistant in the field of human genetics. Working alongside a dedicated and highly skilled team, we collectively delved into the study of a recently identified homozygous frameshift mutation within the SAMD9 gene. This mutation resulted in the complete loss of gene expression in the patient and was linked to pre-and post-natal growth retardation https://doi.org/10.1111/cge.14439. In addition to my research commitments, I had the privilege to share my knowledge and expertise as an instructor at the Lebanese American University. I taught a range of courses that included genetics lab, anatomy lab, ecology lab, general biology lab, and basic biology lab.
